Lots of extreme weather – including an increasing number of heatwaves, floods, etc. – is being forecast for Europe in the future, according to a dire climate scenario released this week by the UNs Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The report writes that high temperatures on the continent are set to exceed the critical thresholds for human health, agriculture and ecosystems, and that, if global average temperature increase beyond 1.5 degrees C, southern Europe is likely to see more wildfires like those seen in recent weeks in Greece, Turkey and Italy.

The IPCC report also points out that European cities are likely to be hit hard by heatwaves, whose frequency and intensity are poised to increase. Meanwhile, droughts and flooding like that seen in Germany and Belgium this season, are also forecast to be more common, and sea-level rises due to the melting of glaciers, permafrost and snow cover is likely to threaten most beaches in Europe.
