Bulgaria Sued for Refusing to Link Business Register to EU System
Reading Time: < 1 minuteThe European Commission took Bulgaria to the European Court of Justice after four years of Sofia refusing to link its national business register to the EU Business Registers system (BRIS).
BRIS is an information system that allows users to search company-specific data simultaneously in all EU countries with the purpose of ensuring better business transparency across the common market. The deadline the EU gave the Bulgarian government to introduce BRIS expired in June 2017.
In a related statement, the European Commission writes: “Bulgaria’s failure to connect to BRIS makes it complicated for EU citizens, companies and professionals to obtain relevant information on Bulgarian companies. Furthermore, without BRIS, business registers cannot cooperate in cross-border mergers that involve Bulgarian companies or in procedures related to cross-border branches of Bulgarian companies.”
