Serbia: Moscow Our Strategic Ally
Reading Time: < 1 minuteDespite Serbia’s aspirations to join 27 member states as a fellow member of the European Union, Belgrade is refusing to back any EU policies that go against Russia, absolutely refusing to support sanctions against Moscow following its actions like the annexation of Crimea.
Russia is Serbia’s friend, speaker of the Serbian parliament Ivica Dacic told participants at a conference dedicated to Russia’s role in the Balkan countries. He recalled that Russia had protected his country’s territory when Moscow did not recognize Kosovo as a sovereign state after breaking away from Serbia. Dacic said that Russia was a strategic ally and that relations between Belgrade and Moscow had never been better.
Meanwhile, Serbia’s neighbors, Montenegro, Albania and North Macedonia, have all joined EU sanctions against Moscow.
