Romania outlines major military modernisation plans

Central European Times 1 min read

Romania’s Ministry of National Defence has announced plans for a wide-ranging modernisation of the armed forces, including the acquisition of new tanks, fighter aircraft, drones and air defence systems.

The ministry says it is pursuing several procurement programmes designed to bring the military in line with NATO standards and to strengthen Romania’s defensive capabilities.

As part of the effort, Romania is in the process of purchasing 54 M1A2 Abrams SEPv3 main battle tanks from the United States, along with support vehicles, ammunition and training systems. The armed forces are also expected to receive a new NATO-standard individual weapon system, with around 200,000 weapons planned for deployment across army units.

In the air, Romania is expanding its fighter fleet through agreements with several allies. It has signed contracts with Norway and the Netherlands for a total of 50 F-16 aircraft, while a separate agreement with the United States covers the future delivery of 32 F-35 Lightning II jets.

The defence ministry also confirmed investments in unmanned systems and air defence. Bayraktar TB2 drones have already been delivered, while additional unmanned platforms and electronic warfare systems are being acquired from European and Israeli suppliers. Romania continues to develop its air defence network through purchases of Patriot missile systems and short-range air defence capabilities.

Officials say the acquisitions are being carried out through partnerships with NATO and European Union member states, as well as other strategic allies, in response to changing security conditions in the region.
