Approved: EU Climate Change Adaptation Strategy

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A key element of the “Green Deal,” on 10 June EU environmental ministers meeting for the last occasion of Portugal’s EU presidency approved a strategy for adaptation to climate change.

Some of the aims of the adaptation strategy, according to Portugal’s minister of environment and climate action, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, are more precise application of better data, and using nature-based solutions, which are believed to strengthen resilience to climate change. Along with assisting biodiversity and protecting/reviving ecosystems, the financial and economic aspects of climate change are also taken into consideration as part of the overall plan, which provides specifics for the European Commission on how the measures entailed should be implemented.

European Commission vice-president in charge of the Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, said that if Europe aims to achieve being the first climate-neutral continent by 2050, the adaptation strategy is a must.
