EC Pushes for Digital Sovereignty by the 2030

Reading Time: < 1 minute

As part of the 2030 Digital Compass targets, the European Commission aims to introduce a series of benchmarks to be achieved by the end of the decade. The ultimate goal for the bloc is to become “digitally sovereign.” The EC aims to mitigate the risks stemming from EU data being in the hands of third countries, primarily the US. As part of the initiatives, it will help the member states to procure next-generation data processing technologies. The issue is particularly burning for Europe as, according to related documents, today 90% of the EU’s data is managed by US companies.
