After being halted in April due to environmental concerns, the construction of 2 km of the Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline has been given the go-ahead by the German maritime authority (BSH) with the continuation of works in Danish waters.
Two German environmental NGOs, Nature And Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and Environmental Action Germany (DUH), who had previously filed lawsuits that continued to delay the construction of the pipeline bringing Russian gas to Germany through the Baltic Sea, told the press they will be headed back to court to appeal the decision.
The construction of North Stream 2 has been subject to US sanctions and repeatedly criticized by European leaders. Now, with the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate goals agreed, the pay-off of another massive pipeline delivering hydrocarbons is thrown into question.
