Serbia General Elections Likely Scheduled for Spring
Reading Time: < 1 minuteIn Serbia, early parliamentary elections will likely be held between 20 March 20 and 3 April of next year. Those dates have been leaked from talks between the ruling party coalition and the opposition on Monday. The presidential and municipal elections will presumably be held at the same time.
Negotiations have been going on between the opposition and the governing coalition in Serbia since 2019 when a majority of the Serbian opposition announced a boycott of the 2020 elections due to, as they claimed, the unfair domination of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in the media and state institutions.
The European Parliament has been acting as a mediator in the talks. Vladimir BilĨik, a member of the European Parliament delegation, has recently suggested that a document laying down the foundations for a compromise between the parties could be prepared by this September.
The development of the so-called “Inter Party Dialogue” on electoral conditions is seen by Brussels as a test of Serbian democracy and carries weight in the country’s progress toward EU accession.
