Russian forces launched a missile attack on the International Center for Peacekeeping and Security, in the west of Ukraine, Sunday morning, according to the BBC. Euronews reports that the Russian military claimed to have killed up to 180 “foreign mercenaries” and substantial weapons shipped in in strikes against the military range, while Ukrainian officials had said earlier that 35 individuals were killed and 130 wounded. The combat training facility, which is used by the Ukrainian military and NATO partners to boost their cooperation, is just 60km from Lviv and 10km from the border with Poland.
Ukraine and Russia signalled that cease-fire talks were making headway on Sunday, with the possibility of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “Our proposals are on the table, and they are very tough,” said President Zelensky’s adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, in a social media video. “First of all, they concern the withdrawal of troops, the ceasefire, and so on.” The two sides are set to resume talks on Monday.
On Saturday, conflict raged to the northwest of Ukraine’s capital, and most Russian ground forces were 25km from the centre of Kyiv, Al Jazeera wrote. In the port city of Mariupol the humanitarian situation remained dire and Chernihiv, Kharkiv, and Sumy all faced heavy shelling by Russian forces encircling those cities.
For a second time, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by phone with President Putin, who did not express a willingness to end the war, according to Macron’s office. Although the conversation lasted for 75 minutes, few details of it were made public.
