Croatia’s Supreme Court sentenced MOL chairman-CEO Zsolt Hernadi and the country’s former prime minister Ivo Sanader to prison sentences for bribery on Monday.
Hernadi paid Sanader EUR 10 million in bribes in 2008-09 to secure Hungarian energy firm MOL’s management rights in its Croatian peer INA, the court found, upholding a Zagreb County Court judgement from 2019. Sanader received a custodial sentence of six years, and Hernadi two years in prison, in absentia.
The verdict is subject to appeal and Hernadi, who was earlier acquitted of these charges in Hungary, will now take the case to the Croatian Constitutional Court, MOL confirmed later on Monday.
