The European Commission along with publishing its second rule of law report for all member states on Tuesday gave a 16 August deadline for Poland to comply with the order issued by the European Court of Justice (CJEU) recently. The CJEU called on the country to freeze all actions by the disciplinary chamber against judges and labelled the country’s disciplinary system for judges as being not in line with EU law.

In case the Warsaw government fails to comply by the deadline the EC will ask the CJEU to impose financial penalties for the action of the disciplinary chamber. Despite the CJEU ruling Małgorzata Manowska First President of the Supreme Court of Poland choose to allow the disciplinary chamber to continue functioning.

The EC rule of law report’s second edition writes in relation to Poland that there is a high risk that fights against high-level corruption fails, freedom of media is deteriorating, just as women’s and LGBTQI+ rights.
