Several EU Countries Call to Strengthen Common Biofuel Oversight

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a joint statement sent to the European Commission, five member states have issued a call to establish stricter supervision of the use of biofuels in the EU. The Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, and Luxembourg made their demand following a number of fraudulent cases related to the sale of used cooking oil of unsustainable origin as transport fuel.

The statement asks the EC to improve chapters of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) concerning the supervision for the use of biofuels in a way to ensure that the EU meets its goals on decarbonizing the transport sector.

“The cases have shown us that consistent and stronger public supervision on the European market is necessary to reduce the risk of fraud since public supervision bodies have the competence to actually commit to truth-finding and check whether or not data is correct,” their document offers.
